How does your organisation examine Black colleagues’ progression?
Reflect on how performance is judged, who receives development opportunities and what happens when concerns arise.
Choose one area to discuss with your leadership team. You’ll receive a question to raise, the evidence to look for and a question about who owns the response.
Answer seven reflection questions
Consider how your organisation examines performance ratings, development, access to opportunity and progression for Black colleagues. Answer based on what you know. “I don’t know” is a useful answer.
Choose your focus
Select the area you most want to discuss with your leadership team.
Use your focus page
Take the question into your next leadership discussion and use the suggested evidence to prepare.
Start the Progression Check
The Check is a reflection tool based on your answers. It is not an assessment, benchmark or diagnostic.
Illume will use your responses to provide your focus page and, if you request a conversation, to prepare for that discussion. We won’t publish identifiable responses. Read our privacy notice.
Who reviews progression, and who acts on the findings?
Black History Month creates an opportunity to ask what your organisation examines throughout the year: how Black colleagues progress, how opportunities are allocated and whether leaders respond when concerns arise.
These are Cultural Governance questions because they concern how decisions are reviewed, who has the authority to act and how their response is scrutinised.
A difference in outcomes does not, by itself, explain why it exists. It gives leaders a question to investigate.
“If an organisation only engages with Black experiences during Black History Month, that is a governance issue.” Hannah Awonuga, Founder & CEORequest a conversation
